The Witches’ Road – Agatha All Along. Final concept art of the Road for the MCU series. Early versions of the Road were a bit more fantastical. John Collins wanted me to do something of creepier vibe that would reflect closer to Billy’s sensibility. We wanted to push it into a gnarly, boggy and misty look.
For the trees, I referenced a great creepy oak tree designed by the fantastic Vance Kovacs. Then we would explore all the different elements that would be parts of Billy’s “construct” and compose them into a cohesive landscape, like how different color leaves would represent different elements of the trials. We must’ve gone through a dozen iterations. It was a lot of fun. Incredible work by the Art Dept + Set built team creating this physical set.
I expanded this painting for the establishing shot of the Road at the end of Ep 2. It was printed as a 90’x30’ backdrop and mounted where the physical set ended for some old school in-camera special effects. You can see the backdrop with the set on the last image. It was very cool to see the magic!
